Chapter 7 · 1983-1988
Downfall and Capture
Brian Ross's September 5, 1983, report on NBC publicized the corruption of Bahamian leaders, causing the government to freeze Lehder's bank accounts and seize his property, leading to near bankruptcy. While on the run, Escobar brought him to Medellín for medical care. Lehder was captured at a farm in Colombia after a new employee informed the police of his location.
He was used by the US government as an informant against the Cartel. In 1987, he was extradited to Jacksonville, Florida, and in 1988, he was convicted and sentenced to life without parole plus 135 years.
