UK Budget Personal Allowance Pensioners Tax Shield

Pensioners on low incomes will be shielded from income tax in John Healey's first Budget on Wednesday BBC. The full, flat-rate state pension is set to increase by 3.9% to £13,036.40 a year from April. Without changes, this amount would exceed the £12,570 personal tax allowance and become subject to income tax BBC. The government previously pledged not to tax those receiving only a state pension. This pledge will be met through plans for a new tax allowance for low-income pensioners BBC. Treasury sources concede the Budget will not feature the scale of tax and spending announcements seen from Labour and Conservative governments in recent years BBC. The Times reports that the tax-free allowance will increase for low-income pensioners in Wednesday's Budget BBC. The Chancellor also decided not to reduce the tax-free pension lump sum BBC. Steve Webb, a former minister, stated this looks like a "decidedly pensioner-friendly" Budget BBC. Reform UK proposed 60 policies, including approving the Rosebank oil field, which Healey is understood to support BBC. Liberal Democrat Treasury spokeswoman Daisy Cooper called for a new growth and defence partnership with the EU to ease the tax burden BBC. The Green Party urged Healey to make the UK affordable, including funding energy bill support by ending a tax relief for data centres BBC.

Our view is that the budget's protection of low-income pensioners demonstrates policy measures that can be mirrored in allocating resources to protect critical workloads from cost overruns.
